About

Why we created HonestBadges.

Restaurant ratings are useful when deciding where to eat, but it is getting harder to tell which reviews are real.

We created HonestBadges after too many regretful experiences at highly rated 4.8, 4.9, or 5.0 restaurants chosen without looking deeper. Later, when we read the reviews more carefully, many of them looked suspicious.

We have also had many great experiences at 4.1 or 4.2 restaurants with good food and a lively atmosphere. Restaurants like that should not get buried simply because their rating is not perfect.

HONESTVERIFIEDBADGE

The review history passed our trust standards.

A Verified badge means the restaurant has enough review history to evaluate and passed our review trust standards across that history. It also means we did not find an obvious high-risk manipulation pattern that would prevent certification.

For diners, it reduces the effort of checking every review detail before making a decision. For restaurants, it helps turn honesty into trust beyond the current rating.

HONESTTRANSPARENTBADGE

Monitoring starts from activation.

A Transparent badge means the restaurant is monitored from activation, but its past reviews are not certified or there is not enough review history to qualify as Verified yet.

This is useful for newer restaurants, restaurants with limited review history, or restaurants that want to build diner trust through transparency from this point forward. As more review history is monitored, a Transparent badge holder may become eligible for a Verified badge later.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

We analyze public Google reviews in depth, including review history, rating balance, review consistency, and public profile consistency. These signals help us understand whether a restaurant's reviews appear trustworthy.

No. The badge does not mean every Google review is real or that the Google rating is certified. It means the restaurant passed our review trust process and remains monitored. We also do not remove or control Google reviews.

Yes. A badge can be removed if review patterns change, restaurant access is lost, or the restaurant appears involved in review manipulation. Suspicious activity is reviewed first, and we normally contact the restaurant before making a final decision. If a badge is removed, the public page no longer shows a Verified or Transparent status.

A card is saved during application, but $0 is charged at that time. Billing starts only after the restaurant is approved and chooses to activate its badge.

If a restaurant cancels, the badge becomes inactive, billing stops, and its Since history does not continue. To get a badge again later, the restaurant must go through a new review from the beginning.
